FULL TIME : MAY & BAKER 2-0 THFC
It was a fine spring like day on Saturday but Heath spirits were definitely dampened by the end of it that’s for sure. Heath fought admirably well against what was a strong May and Baker team unit.
MB took the KO and came out of the starting blocks at full pace resulting in stunning Heath 1-0 on 2 minutes. A through ball was made attempting to split the defence and their power and pace won over the ensuing tussle to shoot a low angled effort passed Lee.
We were literally caught napping and the next 10 minutes saw Heath struggling to not be overwhelmed by this team making a storming start. They were sharp and moved the ball quickly and efficiently. Their movement off the ball was well orchestrated and only after 15 minutes did it seem like we were then getting up to speed with the game.
Once we began to put passes together we began to get a few free kicks. Their right back was dishing out the fouls and should have had a yellow card for not only bundling Joe Chester over but reacting with intent. One free kick saw Charlie Green whip one over the crossbar, and then Ryan Jones shot from 30 yards out but was well wide. We were now battling well such that May and Bakers passes began to go astray somewhat.
Joe Chester got booked a half hour in and we felt hard done by considering the right back continued to commit fouls and was being let off ! And so the match became an even contest with Heath being up to speed and knowing that they were in a game. We had to produce quick one touch football ourselves and though we did May and Baker worked hard to nullify our efforts. They were a young fit and hard working side when not in possession of the ball which we all know is just as important as being in possession of the ball. 41 minutes and Ryan Jones is rested and Max Hawkins goes on.
The first half ended and we all stayed outside for the team talk as opposed to being in the stifling changing room where someone had inexplicably left the heating on full blast!
As play resumed we were making our presence felt, a tantalizing through ball from the Heath was scuppered by the offside flag. On 56 minutes a cross from the right saw Charlie Green head over. Lee collected a MB corner from close in the box.
Heath continued to knock on the door with a good tempo being played. Jack Tollhurst was in fine form again and Max Hawkins played his role well in midfield threatening to deliver that certain pass to break through the solid May and Baker defence, which we did on occasion though the passes would be slightly over hit. Nuts! We were having a good spell with one touch passing and 1-2 play in effect which caused them problems but May and Baker continued to match us in every department. We had a free kick on 68 minutes , then a corner on 70 minutes , then a throw in deep in their half saw Joe Chester turn his man right on the goal line to run at goal and shoot at the near post but the goalie collected …just…! Unlucky. Time was running out and we needed to press the game hence Kameron Dock and Louie O came off and Ryan Jones and Reece Speller went on. Not a minute later though it’s almost game over as a cross in from the right close on the goal line found their player in space to head in from close in on the goal.
Heath did not give in though and they all fought tooth and nail until the final whistle.
Full time 2-0.
Heath played admirably well this day and like Charlie himself said at half time we had earned the right to get something out of the game. Credit to May and Baker though for a solid display and all being said and done it’s a great effort to get to a semifinal in our first season, let’s now channel that disappointment into the league as we learned later on that Connaught Red Star lost a game, which means that we have a good chance to win the league at our first go. So let’s focus on that, there is still glory to be.
